Indian de-mining group suspends operation in Mannar

"Horizon," an Indian de-mining group, has left Vankalai in Mannar district citing security and escalating violence in the North East, civil society sources said. Horizon has been engaged in de-mining activities in three suburbs, Thomaspuri, Swarnapuri and Rathinapuri in Vankalai area for the last two years enabling resettlement of hundreds of displaced families after several years, civil sources said.

Officials of the Horizon de-mining group said they would return to continue their de-mining activities in other selected areas in the Mannar district when the situation in Mannar improves.

However another de-mining group FSD has been continuing its de-mining activities in some parts of the Mannar district, sources said.
