Kinniya volunteer teachers join protest fast[TamilNet, Wednesday, 19 July 2006, 11:15 GMT]Volunteer teachers in Kinniya division in Trincomalee district also joined Wednesday morning in the fasting campaign, demanding permanency, launched by volunteer teachers now being held in Batticaloa and Kalkudah education zones on rotation basis, sources said. About sixty volunteer teachers serving in schools in the Kinniya education zone Wednesday morning commenced their fasting in front of the zonal education office, sources said. They said in a memorandum their demand for permanency is being ignored by the education authorities for trivial reasons. They would be continuing their fasting till their demand is met, memorandum states. Meanwhile volunteer teachers in Batticaloa and Kalkudah are continuing their fast in front of respective zonal education offices, sources said. In the meantime, Kinniya divisional secretariat did not open work Wednesday morning when a group of tsunami affected families staged a protest in front of the office for the delay in paying housing loan. However the protest was later abandoned following an assurance by the authorities concerned that the matter would be referred to higher authorities for immediate action. The DS office opened for work in the afternoon, sources said.
