Welikada political prisoners call off hunger strike

43 Tamil political prisoners detained in Welikada prison called off their hunger protest Tuesday morning around 11:00 a.m. They had been fasting since Saturday. Eleven of the prisoners were immediately admitted to the prison hospital as their condition was reported to critical, sources said.

The prisoners have been held in Welikada for more than a year without charges. They began their hunger protest demanding immediate release, and cases against them should be transferred to law courts in their own districts.

Prisoners also demanded that they should be released on bail if the authorities concerned want time to file case against them in court, sources said.
