Failure to publish voters list in Tamil, violation of Languge Act- Workers Front

The Ceylon Workers United Front (CWUF) Monday filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Sri Lanka's Supreme Court for not publishing voters list in Tamil language. The petitioner trade union has cited the Commissioner of Elections and several government officers as respondents.

The petition states that the Commissioner of Elections has failed to publish voters register for the Nuwara Eliya district in Tamil language as required under the Language Act.

This has violated the fundamental rights of the people, the petition said.

Hence the petitioner begs that the court should order the Commissioner of Elections to publish the voters' register in Tamil language also, legal sources said.
