Two youths shot

The Sri Lankan Police said that two Liberation Tigers were shot dead at a check-post near the Tharavayadi Pillayar temple road in Kalmunai in the south-eastern Ampara district, at around 5.30 p.m. yesterday.

The police said that when they stopped the youths one of them fired at the policemen wounding one police officer. Another policeman then shot and killed the two youths, the police added.

According to the police one of the dead youths has been identified as 'Kannan'.

Later, the police arrested Selvarajah Luxmikanthan, a student of Calumny Wesley College, on information found from 'Kannan'.

The police said they found the address of Luxmikanthan from Kannan and went to his home and asked whether he knew 'Kannan'. The police arrested him when he said that he knew 'Kannan'.

Sources said that Luxmikanthan was a boarder at Kannan's parents' home and had therefore told the police that he knew 'Kannan'.

Tension in the area was high following the shooting incident, residents said.
