Police claim surprise attack on LTTE camps

[TamilNet, Friday, 20 March 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Police sources in Amparai said that the Special Task Force (STF) commandos had launched a surprise attack towards 2-4 base of the Liberation Tigers in the Kanjikudichcha Aaru jungles in the south-east of the Amparai district.

Police sources said that the STF had surprised the Tigers in this large logistic complex and that the operation was still in progress.

However sources in Thirukkovil, 8 km. north of the Kanjikudichcha Aaru area, said that there were no indications of a major operation in the area.

They pointed out that the most of the STF camps between Thirukkovil and Pothuvil in the Amparai district's south-eastern sector do not have sufficient manpower to carry out a large operation.

Kanjikudichcha Aaru jungles are so vast that even if the all the STF had drawn all its commandos from all its camps in area, it would not be enough to undertake an effective operation in these jungles, they said further.
