Tree planting day events held in NorthEast

As a followup to International Environmental Day held earlier this year, Tree planting day events were held in Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Mullaitivu and Mannar Friday, sources said. With Rs 1M funding from UNDP and additional funds from the The Economic Consultancy House (TECH), 10,000 seedlings were distributed in each district to community organizations and schools.

Coconut, teak, Mango, Casuarina for dry, saline areas, Acacia and the other seedlings formed the group of distributed seedlings.

Classes by TECH volunteers that detailed the urgency of adopting environmental friendly business methods and lifestyle were given as selected schools as part of the day's events.

Chief guest to the event held at the Faculty of Agriculture at the Jaffna Campus was Vice Chancellor Professor C.Mohanadas.

LTTE Head of Jaffna Political Wing, Ilamparithi,Agricultural Development Director for Jaffna, Mr. Sinnathurai, Jaffna TECH co-ordinator, Prathap were special guests at the Jaffna campus event.
