VVT fishermen to launch street protest

Fisheries Co-operative Societies in the Valvettithurai division in Jaffna district Friday warned the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) that their members would launch a street protest from next week with damaged boats in tsunami if they are not provided with new boats and fishing gear, sources.

Similar warning has been issued to the Vadamaradchchi North Fisheries Societies Federation that it should take immediate steps to replace the damaged boats with new ones with the assistance of related government agencies, sources said.

Since tsunami that destroyed boats and other equipments needed for the fishing industry, no action has been taken to replace them by the government and the Vadamaradchchi Fisheries Co-operatives Federation, said a memorandum sent to the GOSL and Vadamaradchchi North Fisheries Co-operative Federation, sources said.
