One dead, three injured in explosion in Kachchai

Mr.Kandasamy Kandeepan aged 22 was killed and three others injured Tuesday evening around 6.30 p.m. in Kachchai, a village located 7 km east of Chavakachcheri in Thenmaradchchi division in Jaffna district when an artillery shell found in an abandoned well exploded. The injured were identified as Mr.Apputhurai Pakkiarajah (21), Mr.Sellathurai Saiyoo (20) and Ms Gunasekaram Rajitha (07), all from Kachchai, Police said.

Injured persons were first admitted to Chavakachcheri government hospital and later transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, police said.

The body of Kandeepan was handed over to the mortuary of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, sources said.

Preliminary investigation into the incident by the Chavakachcheri Police revealed that the shell exploded suddenly when neighbours helped to remove it from the well while pumping out the water, sources said.
