Jaffna student dies in road accident

Miss Vamadeva Keerthana, seventeen year old Advanced Level student of Jaffna Chundikuli Girls' College in Jaffna died at Potpathi in the Jaffna district Monday around seven a.m. when a heavy vehicle transporting sand knocked her motorbike and ran over her, Jaffna Police said.

The victim was proceeding to her private school in her low-power motorbike when the accident took place, sources said.

Fearing outraged local residents the driver absconded the scene and took refuge at the Kopay police station.

Residents of the area immediately reported the accident to the Jaffna and Kopay Police. However the Police informed the complainant that they would visit the scene of accident if there were no crowd of people gathered at the site, sources said.

The Police visited the scene after about two hours and conducted inquiries, sources said.

Potpathi road is located in the Kokuvil area, suburb of Jaffna town.
