The Indian Prime Minister Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee had brief meetings with leaders of Tamil parties at a function held the India House in Colombo this evening.

The Indian prime minister separately met TULF president Mr. M. Sivasithamparam, Mr. R. Smbanthar, Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam and Mr. Joseph Pararajasingham.

The TULF leaders briefed the Prime Minister about the political situation in the island and requested the Indian government's help in finding a solution.

"Only India has the power to end the war", the TULF leaders told the Prime minister.

In another meeting the Prime Minister met a group of ex- militant leaders from Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP), People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) and Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO).

EPDP leader Mr. Douglas Devananda, the group's advisor Mr. V. Vigneswaran, Suresh Premachandran and Mr. Wilson of EPRLF, Mr. Siddarthan, leader of the PLOTE and Mr. Sivajilingam of TELO met the prime minister Vajpayee.

The group said "India should use her good office to settle the problem".

Tamil parties had asked for an appointment to meet the Prime Minister. However, the Indian Embassy did not give them a special appointment and arranged an unofficial meeting with the prime minister.

Sources in Colombo said that each of these meetings lasted nearly five minutes.
