The attackers fired two RPG shells into the bedroom where the MP's wife and children were at sleep at the residence of the MP, located on Kannaki Amman Road in Poompuhar in Batticaloa town, behind Batticaloa Bus Depot.

Mr. Senathirajah Jeyananthamoorthy was at home when the attack took place, Batticaloa Police said.

The RPG shells caused extensive damage to the roof of the house. A policeman providing security was slightly wounded.

The MP and his family have been under threat from the paramilitary Karuna Group for a long time.

Karuna Group's Batticaloa office is located about 1 km from Jeyananthamoorthy's house.

Batticaloa Police rushed to the spot.

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) officials visited the site Saturday morning.

Mr. Jeyananthamorthy was TamilNet’s correspondent for Batticaloa before he entered politics and became Tamil National Alliance Member of Parliament for the eastern district in April 2004.
