Youth shot dead in Jaffna town

Unknown gunmen riding in a motorbike shot dead a youth along Kasturiar Road in the center of Jaffna town at 8:30 p.m. Friday, sources in Jaffna said. Packiyarajah Visvakanthan, 32, was standing near the liquor store in front of Rajah Theater when he was shot.

Packiyarajah is a resident of Stanley Road, Jaffna.

Large number of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers, brought to the area soon after the killling, cordoned off the area around Jaffna town and conducted search till midnight Friday, according to local residents. No one was arrested during the search.

Packiyarajah's body was transferred to Jaffna Teaching Hospital at 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning for postmortem examinations, hospital sources said.
