A member of paramilitary Karuna group was shot and seriously injured when unknown gunmen fired at a group of cadres walking from Pillaiyar Temple along Badulla Road to the paramilitaries' office Saturday morning in Chenkalady in Batticaloa District, Eravur police source said.

The injured cadre, Kanagaratnam Suthersan, alias Sarangan, 19, was rushed to Batticaloa hospital.

In an earlier incident Thursday three members of Karuna group were killed and eight others critically wounded when a fellow cadre lobbed a grenade at the sleeping paramilitaries at the same temple.

Chenkalady Pillayar Temple is situated close to the Black Bridge camp of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) located 15 km northwest of Batticaloa town.
