Thousands of devotees participated in the annual ‘Pongal’ festival of the historic Pallampoddar Paththini Amman temple in the Trincomalee district, Monday night.

Hundreds of devotees, Hindus and Buddhists, went in a procession from Trincomalee Pathirakali Ambal Temple and Marriamman to Pallampoddar Pathiniamman temple which is located about 16 k.m. off west of the eastern port town, on Trincomalee Kandy highway.

Special bus services were conducted through out Monday till midnight enabling devotees from all parts of the district to participate in the ‘Pongal.’

The temple is located along Pallampoddar, a river that flows from Kalmuddiyankulam towards Trincomalee Sea at Kappalthurai, another Tamil village close to Chinabay. Later a bridge was constructed over this river. Since then the temple is called Pallampoddar Paththini Amman temple.

Sri Lanka Army maintains a camp in front of the Pallampoddar Bridge close to the temple. The camp was established in 1983.
