Education official arrested in the North

[TamilNet, Sunday, 22 February 1998, 23:59 GMT]
The Department of Education Co-ordinator between the SLA controlled areas and the LTTE controlled areas of the Vanni, Mr. Mylvaganam Sivagurunathan, 53, was arrested on Friday by the Counter Subversive Unit (CSU) of the Sri Lankan Police.

No notice of his arrest was given to his family.

However, the Vavuniya Sri Lanka Red Cross Society made inquiries with the army and police and found out that he was being held at the Vavuniya CSU camp.

Sources said that Mr. Mylvaganam, being the co-ordinator for the education departments, works in the LTTE controlled areas in the Vanni and travels frequently to Mullaithivu, Kilinochchi and Mallavi.

The CSU is interrogating him for extracting information about LTTE positions in Vanni, said some other sources.

Mr. Mylvaganam is yet to be released.
