Shanmugam promotes Singapore business with genocidal Sri Lanka

[TamilNet, Friday, 01 June 2012, 10:26 GMT]
Singapore Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam, visiting Colombo with a 21-strong business delegation and saying "Sri Lanka is well placed to capitalize on the benefits and opportunities offered both by Singapore and globally,” envisaged Sri Lanka to increase attracting ‘leisure travelers’ from the current 850,000 to 20 million a year. Singapore increased its Sri Lanka investment from US $ 53 million last year to US $ 428 million. While media is busy in highlighting his Colombo visit and the ‘Buddhist’ visit of Rajapaksa to Thailand, alternative media brought out how Sri Lanka has become a hub for sales of girls for sex industry involving Singapore, Thailand and Arabs. Case of a 16-year-old Tamil girl from Batticaloa was one of them. Tapping genocide-generated business opportunity results from global criminalization of States, observers said.

Speaking along with Shanmugam, while the SL tourism official Vipul Wanigasekara urged Singapore to invest in the ‘hospitality’ sector, SL minister Rishad Bathiudeen who steers many of Colombo’s structural genocide programmes, said that there are several more opportunities available for Singapore businesses, given the advantage of ‘two neighbouring giants’ [India and china] Sri Lanka has agreements with.

A new Memorandum of Understanding for ‘deeper relations’ was signed between Singapore and genocidal Sri Lanka on Tuesday.

Meanwhile a Colombo media on Sunday brought out the case of a 16-year-old Tamil girl from Batticaloa who was sold to two Arab nationals, aged 49 and 27, from Riyadh.

A foreign employment agency in Batticaloa that lured the girl from her widowed mother having three more daughters to take care of, sold her to the Arabs.

The Hikkaduwa (a tourist hub in the South) police arresting the Arabs on 19 May, on a tip from the Women and Child Protection Bureau (WCPB), have filed a case against them for buying an under-aged girl for a sum of Rs. 200,000, before raping her. According to the girl the Arabs had taken many other girls too.

The Arabs with a rented house in Colombo were regular ‘tourists’ to Sri Lanka, and they were also found with a Thai girl whom they had purchased in Bangkok.

Citing details provided by the WCPB on the case of a 17-year-old girl from a broken family in Chilaapam (Chilaw), Lakbima News on Sunday has also brought out the sex racket Singapore is involved in.

According to the girl rescued from the sex and slave trade in Singapore, there were 200 to 300 girls of her plight.

Underworld links and even politicians are involved in this burgeoning trade, the media report said.

According to the WCPB, if such rackets are not brought to a halt soon, Sri Lanka will gain an image as a place where sex workers can be readily hired, the report said.

The fundamental issue is global criminalisation of States, observers of alternative polity in the island said.

Sri Lanka, where genocide could be committed, abetted, ignored and continued with impunity jointly by all the States craving for business is a test case for the world. Shanmugam’s business interest is only a small reflection but the significance is in the modes operandi of the system using a Tamil to do it, the observers said.

The conviction of the Liberian President Charles G. Taylor by the International Criminal Court to 50 years of imprisonment for his role of “aiding and abetting, as well as planning, some of the most heinous and brutal crimes recorded in human history,” in Sierra Leone where he was also plundering diamond mines to pay for guns, and the New York Times assessing Barack Obama’s license to take decision without hand-wringing on who should be killed in the ‘counterterrorism’ war are just two sides of the issue, the observers further pointed out.

"What I did was done with honour […] I was convinced that unless there was peace in Sierra Leone, Liberia would not be able to move forward," Taylor told earlier to his conviction on Wednesday.

The White House considered “All military-age males in a strike zone as combatants [….] unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent,” The Times said.
