Pre-school building destroyed in air strike in Muttur east

Pre-school and the science laboratory of Chenaiyoor Central College were damaged in the air strike and artillery shell attack launched by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Tuesday evening on the villages in the Muttur east in the Trincomalee district held by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a worker of a local non-governmental organization in the area told Tamilnet by telephone. The NGO worker was under the first floor of the college when the artillery attack took place.

Civil society members meet SLA in Jaffna Bishop's House

Gunnmen target auto-rickshaw owners, another killed

An auto-rickshaw owner was shot dead by gunmen at Irupalai junction on the Jaffna-Pt.Pedro main road, around 1 p.m., Sunday. "The victim was sitting inside his vehicle. He was chased by the assailants when he tried to escape. He was shot and killed near Vairavar temple. Sri Lanka Army soldiers were standing by," an eyewitness told TamilNet. The SLA has a large camp about 100 metres from the junction. In a seperate incident, a former member of the PLOTE, Amirthanathan Kennady,35, was gunned down at Navanthurai, in Jaffna, around noon, Sunday.

SL President pledges to end violence of Tamil armed groups - Balasingham

Mr. Balasingham and Mr. Jon Hanssen-BauerThe Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapakse has assured the LTTE leadership, through the Norwegian facilitators, that he will do everything within his powers to implement the pledges given by the government at the first session of peace negotiations held in Geneva in February this year. The President has instructed the military authorities to take necessary action to disarm Tamil armed groups and to put an end to the violence perpetrated against the Tamil Tigers and their supporters in the government controlled areas in the northeast. The development was reported after a meeting between the Norweign Envoy Mr. Hanssen-Bauer and the Chief Negotiator of the LTTE Mr. Anton Balasingham Saturday.

He lodged three separate complaints with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), sources said.

Brisk polling in Amparai local election reported

Brisk polling is reported in the elections for the twelve local authorities in the Amparai district, which began Thursday morning at 7 a.m. At noon about fifty percent of voters have registered their franchise. Polling to four Tamil speaking local authorities, Sammanthurai, Thirukovil, Karaitivu and Alaiyadivembu and eight Sinhala local authorities, Amparai UC, and PS of Damana, Dehiyattakendiya, Uhana, Maha Oya, Namal Oya, Padiyattalawa and Laguhala in the Amparai district are in progress, election department officials in the south-eastern district said.

Nadesan said Tuesday in an extensive interview with TamilNet. He also discussed the multi-functionary expansion of the Thamileelam Police, including the use of DNA forensics. The Tamil Eelam Police Chief also said that the detention of three Sri Lankan police had been deliberately portrayed as arbitrary arrests by the LTTE but was based on specific intelligence on the individuals.

Missing LTTE cadres arrested by SLA, charges Elilan

"Our organisation has lodged a fresh complaint based on evidence though eye-witnesses to substantiate our earlier complaint," said Mr.S.Elilan, Trincomalee district political head of the LTTE.

Maj.Gen Chandrasiri told the civil society delegation that responses will be provided within two weeks after consultations with higher authorities in Colombo.
