Islets residents protest against SLA, SLN harassment

Hundreds of civilians of islets in the Jaffna district Monday held a demonstration condemning the harassment by Sri Lanka Army (SLAN) and Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) personnel stationed in islets and the Sinhala Buddhist chauvinists' elements in the south. They went in a procession from Palakattu junction to Kayts Divisional Secretariat office, sources said.

Jaffna Islets' ferry service to use Indian boats

Four of the fifty-two Indian fishing boats seized by the Jaffna High Court for poaching in the northern territorial waters are to be used for transporting passengers between islets of the Jaffna district. A team of engineers of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources recently visited Jaffna to finalise arrangement in this regard, Jaffna Fisheries Department official Mr.T. Tharmalingam said.

Nedunthivu residents without proper transport to mainland

Residents of Nedunthivu, one of the islets in the Jaffna peninsula have been agitating for a better passenger boat service for travelling to the Jaffna mainland as the "Kumudhini" mechanized boat has gone out of order for the last eight months. Privately owned two small boats now plying between Nedunthivu and the mainland could not stand up to the rough sea following the change of monsoon, civil sources said.
