Foreign envoys meet IDPs, medical, fisheries officials in Jaffna

Pedro, Vadamaradchi raised the current acute shortage of essential food provisions, medical supplies and the malnutrition and starvation in the Jaffna peninsula caused by the closure A9 land route, with the Foreign envoys of Switzerland, Australia and United Kingdom when they visited the hospital Wednesday, sources in Point Pedro said.

Jaffna bids farewell to slain MP, relatives reveal assassination attempt

0A key EPDP paramilitary operative with a handgun had been searching for Nadarajah Raviraj when the late Tamil parliamentarian visited his hometown last month, revealed relatives who attended the funeral of late MP in Jaffna. The entire Jaffna peninsula was at a standstill as the funeral procession paraded through the streets of Chavakachcheri to the cremation grounds located at Sri Lanka Army High Security Zone. Journalists were harassed by Sri Lankan soldiers after the funeral.

People of Jaffna pay last respects to Raviraj

0People of Jaffna peninsula, in their thousands, paid their last respects to the remains of Ravirarj, the slain Tamil National Alliance (TNA) for Jaffna district, whose body was flown from Colombo to Palaly air base in Jaffna Tuesday around 11:00 a.m and later kept at Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) at Nallur. Special Commissioner JMC S. Sarvanabavan took charge of Raviraj's remains around 11:30 a.m which was kept in the JMC precincts for people to pay their last respects.

Thousands pay homage to Raviraj in Colombo

Three bodies given decent burial in Mirusuvil

Three bodies of civilians killed, during the period after the August 11 clashes in areas close to Thenmaradchchi Sri Lanka Front Defence Lines in Muhamalai, were exhumed at Mirusuvil in Thenmarachchi Monday in the presence of Chavakacheri magistrate Annalingam Premshankar, legal sources in Chavakachcheri said. After the mandatory death inquests and postmortem examinations on the bodies were held they were given decent burial.

21 bodies recovered in Kilali

Kodikamam Police Friday recovered bodies of 16 men and 5 women in Kilali area where heavy fighting was reported recently. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was making arrangements to bury the bodies as the bodies were in highly decomposed state. Chavakacheri Magistrate A. Premsankar was visiting the area Friday with the Police officials.

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed and 3 seriously wounded in a Claymore mine explosion that took place at Meesalai, 4 km northeast of Chavakacheri in Thenmaradchi sector of Jaffna district around 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Traffic through A9 at Messalai was blocked and a cordon and search operation was launched by the SLA troopers.

Two bodies exhumed from Kaithady site

0Two bodies that were suspected to be buried in Kaithady site were exhumed from the shallow grave near Kaithady bridge Thursday in decomposed state, civil society sources from Jaffna said. A wrist watch was found from one of the bodies. One body was recovered Wednesday near the site where the body of the disappeared Hindu priest was discovered by workers who went for sand mining in the area earlier this week.

Eight civilians feared killed in Thenmaradchi, blood trace, clothes found

Villagers who went searching for eight missing youths in Manthuvil East in Thenmaradchi, Jaffna, found blood trace, pieces of clothes, 3 identity cards and at least 6 empty cases of bullets Sunday morning. Eight young men who went to Seerani Kelakkai temple in Manthuvil East, around 7 km northeast of Chavakachcheri are reported missing. A teacher and general secretary of the temple trustee board, and four students were among the victims who are feared dead. Fear has gripped the entire Kelakkai village.

Young boy succumbs to Claymore shock wounds

A 16-year old boy, who was standing outside his house succumbed to his shock wounds, caused by a Claymore mine explosion outside his house in Chavakacheri. A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was wounded in the explosion. Two civilians were wounded when SLA soldiers opened fire after the explosion, civilian sources said. The Claymore explosion took place, 200 meters from the SLA Chavakacheri Command (52 Division) on Post office road in Chavakachcheri, around 9 a.m., Monday.

Three business owners, retired Police officer, shot dead in Thenmaradchi

A reputed jewellery shop owner from Chavakachcheri, a mini-tractor owner from Sarasalai and a tailor shop owner from Usan, Mirusuvil, were shot and killed in three shooting incidents, by suspected paramilitary cadres working with the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) intelligence, civilian sources in Chavakacheri said. Families fearing reprisals from the Sri Lanka military in Jaffna peninsula have again started moving into safer areas inside the Liberation Tigers controlled territories, passing the Muhamalai checkpoint after the reports of serial killings in SLA controlled Thenmaradchi sector of Jaffna district Thursday.

Claymore attack in Jaffna, 5 SLA soldiers, 2 humanitarian workers killed

Five Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers travelling in a SLA truck and two Tamil humanitarian workers belonging to Human Development Centre (HUDEC), who were riding in a vehicle that was overtaking the SLA truck, were killed when a Claymore mine fixed to a lamp post was exploded Monday afternoon by unidentified attackers on A9 Road at Mirusuvil, 9 km northeast of Chavakachcheri, police in Chavakacheri said. Two SLA soldiers and two HUDEC staffers were also injured in the Claymore explosion.

SLA gunfire injures elderly man

Clothing store owner killed in Chavakachcheri

Sivasankar, 28, from Meesalai and owner of a clothing store in Chavakacheri town was shot dead at 5.30 p.m. Tuesday on Dutch Road by gunmen suspected to be Sri Lanka Army (SLA) intelligence, sources in Jaffna said. Sivasankar, originally from Erlalai in Valigamam, was displaced from his home town, married and settled in Meesalai, sources said.

SLA soldier killed in Chavakacheri, civilians attacked in reprisal

One Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed when a tractor carrying SLA soldiers came under gunfire from unknown gunmen near Chavakacheri Hindu College Saturday evening, sources in Jaffna said. Three SLA soldiers were injured in three other grenade attacks in Meesalai located 3 km from Chavakachcheri. The injured soldiers were first taken to Puttur SLA camp by road and from there they were airlifted to Palaly military hospital. SLA troopers stationed along the A9 highway between Meesalai and Chavakacheri attacked civilan travellers with gun butts. Smashed motorbikes were seen on both sides along the highway, travellers who escaped from the site told TamilNet.

Grenade attacks escalate, Jaffna tense

0At least seven grenade attacks were reported Friday in Jaffna. The attacks on Sri Lanka Army (SLA)positions escalated amid total shutdown in several SLA controlled areas of the Jaffna peninsula following the Neerveli kilings on Thursday. A handbill issued in the name of "Roaring People's Force" warned that reprisal attacks on SLA soldiers and intelligence operatives will escalate if attacks against Tamil activists and civilians continued.

Grenade explosions, tension mark election eve in Jaffna

0Tension prevailed in Jaffna, and streets were deserted at 7.00 p.m. as several grenade explosions marked the election eve. Unidentified assailants lobbed grenades at the offices of the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) offices in Chavakacheri, Manipay, Achchuveli, Point Pedro and Mallakam where the EPDP intelligence operatives and supporters were reportedly co-ordinating plans for vote-rigging. EPDP has campaigned in favour of presidential candidate Mahinda Rajapakse.
