US Congressman visits Kilinochchi, meets with LTTE

Mother-Child Care centre new building opened in Akkarayan

New building for the Maternity and Child Care Centre was declared open on Wednesday at Akkarayan, which is, located about 20 km off from Killinochchi at eighth milepost. The TRO of Killinochchi district with the funding Norwegian TRO constructed the newly opened building, sources said.

TECH Official departs for European tour

The iterinery for the privately funded visit includes Norway, Denmark, France and Germany, sources added.

NEHRP to reconstruct 7,000 houses in NorthEast

UK medical team concludes tsunami mission

London medical team conducted clinics in Mullaitivu, Killinochchi, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Kalmunai in the northeast and in Kamburupitya, Matara and Galle in the south lasting fourteen days since its arrival, one of its three co-ordinators Mr.Anis Patel said.

SEDB distributes solar power units to Mulankavil villagers

The Socio Economic Development Bank (SEDB) headquartered in Killinochchi Friday evening distributed eleven solar power units on a loan scheme to its customers to provide electricity to Mulankavil, a village which is located about 45 km west of Killincochi along Poonagari-Mannar road, under its first phase of rural electrification project, sources said.

War memorial declared open in Ithathavil, Pallai

A memorial hall housing a destroyed SLA tank in Ithavil, a village along the A9, 3 km north of Pallai, was declared open Saturday morning 9.30 AM by LTTE's commander for northern front forces, Col. Theepan. The SLA tank which was destroyed in LTTE offensive "Unceasing Waves III" symbolises the landmark Ithavil battle that breached the Main Supply Route (MSR) life-line to the Elephant Pass (EPS) garrison, said LTTE's commander for northern front forces, Col. Theepan, who declared the memorial hall opened.

Poverty alleviation woes highlighted

An organisation for the 'Samurdhi' poverty alleviation program officers in Sri Lanka's northeast and in the Nuwara Eliya District was inaugurated Friday in Vavuniya. Thousands of people living in poverty in several districts of the northeast do not receive any benefit under this program, according to the governers of the new organisation. The Samurdhi program is also affected by a shortage of field officers in the north.

Canadian delegation visits Trincomalee, sees WUSC activities

Red Cross signs MoU to reconstruct tsunami hit medical institutions

JICA to give blackboards in Poonagari

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will give Japanese Kokuban (Blackboards) to primary classes of small schools in Poonagari division of Kilinochchi Friday morning, JICA said in a statement. JICA Sri Lanka has planned to distribute 121 high quality blackboards among the primary classes from grade 1 to 5 in all Schools in Poonagari Division.

Thamilchelvan, Nadesan bound for Europe

A high level delegation of Liberation Tigers will begin an official visit to several European capitals from Friday. “Our meetings will focus on delivering aid to Tsunami affected people in northeast directly and efficiently”, Mr. S. Puleedevan, Secretary General of the LTTE peace secretariat in Kilinochchi, told TamilNet. The delegation led by Mr. S. P Thamilchelvan, head of LTTE’s political division, leaves Colombo Thursday and will travel to Norway, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Ireland, and Switzerland. The Tigers will also visit the European Union headquarters in Brussels, Puleedevan said.

SEDB opens tenth bank branch in Vakarai

Japan donates Rs 8.9 million to upgrade Thellipalai hospital

Kumaratunga says no paramilitaries with Sri Lanka army

Sri Lanka's President Chandrika Kumaratunga told Norwegian special peace envoy Mr. Eric Solheim that there aren’t any paramilitaries working with the Sri Lankan armed forces, according to a press release by the Presidential Secretariat Friday. The Liberation Tigers say that Colombo had committed to disarm paramilitaries working with the Sri Lankan armed forces in the island’s northeast under the terms of the cease fire agreement (CFA) it signed with them three years ago. The statement said that Mr. Solheim conveyed to Ms Kumaratunge LTTE’s concern regarding the implementation of Article 1.8 of the CFA in relation to disarming of paramilitary groups when he met her Thursday in Colombo.
